Illuminated I
In Java, the island where I grew up, we have an expression ‘to buy a cat in a sac’ [beli kucing dalam karung], which means one is taking a risk by making a decision without any control over the outcome. The assignment on the illuminated I is a self-reflection on my way of being, my way of looking, and how others might see me. I choose to represent myself as a cat inside a mailing box who sees itself as a lady, a sartorial human being. The pet seemed to be domesticated and trained properly to live in the box, but ultimately, it is only a cat, far from a lady. The pet dwells in a cardboard box for mailing that is about to be sent away somewhere. If the box breaks, it might free the pet into another magical realm.
